The great science of Vastu, the art of building your home in harmony with Natures laws, originated in India. Vastu is part of the Stapatya Veda that comes from the Atharva Veda which is one of the four Vedas. The science of Vastu originated when Lord Brahma, a demigod empowered by God to create, was creating a multitude of auspicious and inauspicious beings at the beginning of the creation.

While so engaged, Lord Brahma and the demigods attempted to create the aura, but instead a formless demonnamed Vastu Purush appeared. He was the manifestation of unrestrained chaotic energy. This demon needed to be contained since he was threatening to wreak havoc throughout the universe. Lord Brahma and the demigods devised a plan to stop him. They threw him to Earth and sat on him. Being pinned down in this way, with Lord Brahma in the middle and many exalted demigods and sages surrounding him, the Vastu Purush was completely purified and thereafter was celebrated as a mahabhagavata, a great devotee of God. This is confirmed by the ancient Vedic mantra: om mahabhagavataya vastupurushaya svaha.

The inside and outside area of every building is portrayed in a Vastu Purush Mandala grid that contains 81 different energy fields (see page 105). In the centre is the brahma-sthan, the place where Lord Brahma resides. In the fields surrounding Lord Brahma reside many other great demigods and sages who are all positioned on various parts of the Vastu Purushs body. In the northeast of all buildings lies the head of the Vastu Purush and it is therefore very inauspicious to have a toilet in the northeast. Later chapters in this book explain the consequences of various serious Vastu defects, as well as the rewards of having good Vastu, and most importantly how Vastu defects can easily be corrected.

Applying Vastu to living and working structures not only gives protection from subtle negative influences but attracts auspicious energies to help maintain and increase ones health, prosperity, and wisdom. The Vedas teach that we are eternal living entities and have taken temporary bodies. Both the body and the house are our temporary temples, therefore we should utilise our time in this sphere to attain the eternal realm where everything is completely auspicious.Ancient Indian temples reflect our multi-dimensional universe according to cosmic laws. They connect us with Natures higher beings and harmonious universal forces.India's ancient times are described as extremely prosperous. In particular the architects of the greatest structures drew their plans based entirely upon the laws of Vastu. Aristocrats would never buy plots or buildings that contravened Vaastu.
