Vaastu Shastra
People today look for more cosmically balanced home or offices. Builders and designers incorporate the correct orientation according to Indian and Chinese meta-physical systems from the planning stage itself.
Vaastushastra is based on the principle that Vaastu a house or an adobe is a living soul. An entity (Vaastupurush) with life sustaining activities and diseases (Vaastudosh) .
A tiger faced (Vyaghramukh) plot in the south, results in concentration of stress while cow faced (goumukh) plots allows for release of stress, however the same tiger faced plot may prove beneficial for someone conducting business from those premises.
Vaastushastra can be defined as a systemic attempt to provide guidelines for building abodes which are free of destructive radiation, structures and are in complete harmony with the cosmic forces and allow frictionless flow through the "pranas". This in turn harmonizes with the panchmaha - bhutas, the basic five elements - space, air, fire, water and earth or the aakash, vaayu, agni, jal and prithvi. Thus Vaastushastra attempts perfect correlation of all these basic elements. According to Yogashastra our bodies are composed of energy channels known as nadis and out of these the most important are considered the Ida (chandra Nadi), Pingala (Surya Nadi) and the Shushubhna (Brahma Nadi).Ida has control over the east and northern directions thus all creative works, art, culture, research, life promoting beneficial activities are attributed to leftor northern current flow.
Pingala or Surya Nadi controls the west and south directions and all violent destructive forces, torture, sorrow, weapons worldly attractions are attributed to this right or south flow. Brahma or Madhyam Nadi represents the holy and divine path and allows mediation, reading of religious scriptures, literatures and academic pursuits. Maintaining the Ida flow gives worldly goods and divine pleasures while blocking the pingla flow avoids destruction and violent tendencies, which in turn determine the directions and the often quoted good east and bad south directions.
The premise of Pranas, Ida, and Panchmahabhutas translates into the concept of five elements that arise out of the interplay of yin and yang and represent different manifestations of the chi in Feng Shui which literally means wind and water. Gill Hale an international authority on Feng Shui says " the chi is the life force of all animate things, the quality of environment and the driving force in human beings ". The purpose of Feng Shui is to create environments where the chi flows smoothly to achieve physical, spiritual, mental and financial health.
Traditionally Feng Shui is closely linked to nature. It is based on the idea that the chi or the energy vibrations of every place have a distinct personality and when this energy is in harmony with nature, benefits flow in. Inner changes about by external environment. The environment is in turn composed of basic five categories of water, wood, fire, earth and metal.
Offices and business complex are perhaps the two areas where Vaastu and Feng Shui find the maximum usage. In South Asian countries, consulting a Feng Shui expert before selecting a commercial building is common practice. In Hong Kong a prominent example of a building with good Feng Shui is the Hong Kong bank building which apparently meets all the guards and shields required to keep the benevolent forces active. The Chinese correlate mountain ranges to dragons and the building lies in the dragon dens of Victoria peak. The building has two other buildings housing banks on either side which protect it acting as thetigers arms and the dragons arm. A water body in the front prevents the natural forces from filtering out.
The Chinese have a saying, first luck, second destiny, third Feng Shui, fourth virtue and fifth education and although Feng Shui can be a powerful tool to shape our lives it is not a cure, says Gill Hale. What we do our lives and how we behave towards other plays a powerful role, Feng Shui is just part of the complete package.
Vaastu is not about blind faith and magic but about creating physical mental and spiritual balance with the environment with directions, positions, placements, colors, combinations, all mere tools to achieve consonance.
